Building the Right House

The house that endures the test of time and troubles is the house that is built with the right kind of stuff. What are you putting in your life? What are you building with? When God is involved in the building, we will persevere and prevail.

“If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.” – 1 Corinthians 3:14, NKJV

If you have ever lived with a teenager, you already know they go through a stage of acting like they know more than you. Can you imagine if your son or daughter actually grew up to be the sharpest person in the world? David’s son was exactly that. Solomon is known to have been the smartest of all men, but David knew IQ and experience aren't enough.

Unless the Lord builds the house,

the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the guards stand watch in vain. Psalm 127:1

In many ways, he is saying, Look, Son, you may be a wise guy, but if you want to build something that is lasting, you must include God in your plans.

At that time, Solomon was preparing to build the temple of God. David lost that privilege because of sin, but God did not remove the blessing from his bloodline. It was passed on to his son. So, when David reminds Solomon to honor God as the architect and builder, David is speaking from a lesson he learned the hard way. I think most of us have learned through our missteps and mistakes. Trying to construct a life that can stand solid through years of change and challenge requires more than our smarts and systems. We need the Sovereign Lord to build the house. As with Solomon’s important temple project, you and I -- our spirits are where the presence of God dwells.

“Do you not know that you are a house of God and that the Holy Spirit lives in you? If any man destroys the house of God, God will destroy him. God’s house is holy. You are the place where He lives.” –1 Corinthians 3:16, NLV

“Do you not know that your body is a house of God where the Holy Spirit lives? God gave you His Holy Spirit. Now you belong to God. You do not belong to yourselves. God bought you with a great price. So honor God with your body. You belong to Him.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19, NLV

The wisest thing that we can ever do is to humble ourselves and know that God is in control. He knows exactly what we need in our lives. If your home – your life—is unsteady, your marriage will be rocky, your children will be unstable and uncontrollable, your job will be dissatisfying, and very little will bring you peace. That is the instability of a house built with shoddy materials from a flawed blueprint. Your blueprint. But that is not how God designed you.

The house that endures the test of time and troubles is the house that is built with the right kind of stuff. What are you putting in your life? What are you building with? When God is involved in the building, we will persevere and prevail.

When the Lord builds the house,
your life is reinforced
with strength, power, and wisdom.

“If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.” – 1 Corinthians 3:14, NKJV

When the Lord builds the house, your life is reinforced with strength, power, and wisdom. Nothing goes to waste, your foundation is solid. Even when the ground of your circumstances shakes, your house will stand. You will not be shaken. Your family will not be forever-broken. Experience the reward of a life well built.
