Holy Spirit Oil

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1:3)

Oil is a widely understood symbol of the Holy Spirit’s anointing and is explained in the key scripture of my book, Spirit Revolution. — Isaiah 61:1-2:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Holy Spirit oil is more necessary for our spirits than engine oil is for a car.

Look at the similarities:

Oil Reduces Friction: When we move alongside others, family, co-workers, even in the church, we sometimes rub each other the wrong way — friction. It’s a human condition. With many personalities, experiences, goals, and attitudes, things can get heated. In motors and in man, energy to overcome friction is converted into heat, not movement. Think of all the time wasted bickering and stewing in our frustrations with others. Without the Holy Spirit oil, you will spend your energy on staying heated instead of moving forward and being productive.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)

Oil Cleans: Engine oils pick up any contaminants in the engine and carry them away. The Holy Spirit’s work in your life will help you live joyfully, filtering little particles of negativity from your mind, and so they aren’t deposited into your behaviors. Paul’s letter to the Philippians encourages us to think on these things: “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable,” anything “excellent or praiseworthy” (Philippians 4:8).

Oil Prevents Corrosion: An added benefit of a vehicle’s lubrication system is a spiritual blessing to us, as well. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, no matter our situation, our age, our past mistakes, or how conditions may appear on the outside, we are protected and usable. As long as we keep a supply of spiritual oil circulating through our prayer and worship, we will not waste and wear away from the harsh effects of life in these times.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed… Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 16)

It’s amazing what happens when God’s people have the right attitude about life, and who we are in Christ Jesus. Our speech is kind, positive, and full of love; our actions are covered in the oil of the anointing.

All Scriptures are from the New International Version.
